This is a blog for vegans of all sizes! Vegans don't all fit into popular culture's idea of what we look and act like and we love good food. This is a place for delicious food, cool people, and animal rights. This short video highlights the incredible Turlock rescue, “”the largest farmed animal rescue in California history.” Of 50,000 hens who were abandoned to starve for two weeks, 4,460 were saved, and Animal Place, a nonprofit sanctuary in California, brought in 4,100.

This is Turlock the Documentary, and tells the story of the hens and their rescuers. Want to support the hens? Donate to Animal Place—they do truly wonderful work. Please help them continue to provide a loving home for hundreds of rescued farmed animals - pigs, cows, chickens, goats, and sheep - each year.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FIND A BABY BIRD
Spring is coming! That means adorable squeakers, as shown above, and lots of other baby birds are on their way!
If you find a baby bird on the ground- it doesn’t necessarily need assistance! Be sure to check this handy guide, (courtesy of Emily) before you decide to intervene. Many baby birds go on walkabouts with their parents before they learn to fly and this is a normal part of the bird’s development!
Also, (as Emily mentioned!) birds do not smell HUMAN on their babies and reject them, this is a myth! As per the guide, if a nestling has fallen out of the nest and you need to put it back, you can totally do this! And remember, a baby bird’s best chance of survival is to stay with it’s parents, so be careful with the little ones and be sure to consult your trusty guide!♥

Between February 23-24, 2012, Animal Place and Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary coordinated the largest farm animal rescue in California history. More than 4,400 hens were saved from A&L Poultry in Turlock, California after the owner left the hens without food for more than two weeks.

More than 3,200 of those hens arrived to Animal Place’s two sanctuaries in Grass Valley and Vacaville, California. This video shows the reality of egg farms across the country and the suffering that animals endure there.

When the birds were rescued, they were able to stretch their wings, walk on grass, and see sunlight for most likely the first time in their lives. Everything natural to these social beings was taken from them at the egg farm.

If you would like to help these hens, visit animalplace.org or simply reduce or eliminate eggs from your diet.

Separation of a cow and her calf. This is a clip from a French documentary about the realities behind farmed animals. Watch as the mother cow chases down the van kidnapping her calf. It’s one of the most heart-breaking things I’ve ever witnessed. And she must endure this over and over and over and over again until she’s slaughtered for meat.

[Image: A brown hen missing the top part of her beak, which appears to be cut down to the nostrils. The hen is inside a carrier crate.]
My friend Melissa, who regularly transports rescued shelter animals, was just called down the animal pound today to pick up a hen who was horribly debeaked as a chick. As with all hens in the egg industry, this hen had her beak painfully seared off with a hot blade at a young age. The hen is unable to eat or drink normally and was likely abandoned as a result.
However, Melissa has secured a sanctuary home for this little angel hen but she will require copious vet care before she can be allowed to live with fellow birds. Please consider making a small donation to help her!!
Please consider donating $5 or more to help this sweet and gentle hen get the vet care she needs to live out her life in peace and comfort: http://homelessanimalfriendfunds.chipin.com/debeaked-cacc-hens-medical-care
